Built in 1110, the present-day parish church was the official cathedral in the Faroes during the Middle Ages and was the burial site for bishops and others. The church was most recently excavated and restored from 1962 to 1967. The modern altarpiece was painted in 1967 by Faroese artist S.J. Mikines. Artifacts on display include a bishop’s crosier from ca.1200 and a gravestone from ca. 1400.
